ZAMAK
Zamak is an alloy composed of zinc, aluminium, magnesium and copper. It features hardness, high tensile strength, a density of 6.6 g/cm³ and a melting temperature of 386 °C. This material can be injected (by cold or hot chamber and by centrifugation), and another possible process is casting in shell earth. It is a cheap material, has good mechanical resistance and plastic deformability, and good castability. It can be chromed, painted and machined. The only disadvantage of this material is that the temperature in the presence of humidity attacks it, causing intercrystalline corrosion (a desert-like appearance). It can be used for structural parts. When injected under pressure, internal pores or bubbles may appear in the injection or casting process, which can lead to a reduction in the mechanical resistance of the parts. However, the correct injection procedure will generate a homogeneous distribution of fine pores, which will promote the toughness of the part being injected, as the growth of cracks will be slowed down by these fine pores.
