The imminent entry into force of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) has generated concern in the European aluminum industry, as it could increase production costs by between 24% and 31%, affecting competitiveness against imports. The aluminum sector is at a crossroads: growing demand linked to the energy and technological transition coexists with significant challenges such as increased production costs, regulatory pressure, and international competition. For European industry—and Spanish industry in particular—to survive this “perfect storm,” finding a balance between sustainability, competitiveness, and adaptation to the changing times will be key.
